Mustaches, Hipsters, and Memories

Folk rockers Baywood recently an engagement with the Larimer Lounge. A sold out show, energy was more than abundant. Things were sure to be far more exciting than anything else going on over the weekend. The California duo ignited the stage with sharp vocals and stage presence unmatched for band consisting of only two men.

Fierce winds and bitter cold wasn’t stopping Baywood’s first sold out show. Concert goers huddled close for warmth as they into the venue. Waiting eagerly for the new sensation, that has taken over the local radio. The moment finally arrived Baywood finally made their grand entrance. Wielding two acoustic guitars and tambourine foot apparatus’.

Jarrad, began singing perfectly in pitch with a great big smile on bearded face. Joe, full of energy being in his hometown. Selling the audience energy. The crowd surged forward to greet them with smiles and singing along. If there was a person not enjoying the show I didn’t see them. Baywood stole the night and proved why they deserved their sold out show.

Switching between guitar, harmonica, and upright bass, Baywood showed their multi instrumental styles. Simple and pure the duo have mastered the art of live shows. With an hour long set filled with their hits Fuel for The Fire, Dream Maker, Beside The Lake, and I Can Breathe Again. No one was disappointed when they left except that it was over.

Baywood has found the thin line between radio and pure love. The duo exceeds all expectations and make you feel their music. Playing in the purest form, acoustically, have brought together a perfect mesh of everything we love about music again.

Baywood Talks Love, Music, and The Future.

I was able to sit down with facial hair sporting duo Baywood before their sold out show at the Larimer Lounge. Hear about their goals and the new upcoming full length album.

Since the release of your album “Seasons”, you have blown up in the Denver music scene how does that feel?

Jarrad- “ It’s probably very different for both of us. It’s awesome, shocking I guess because it’s very new. The initial shock hit’s the room, it’s definitely seeping in, and it’s so lovely and I’m so flattered and pleased that it has done so well here so far. Everyone has been so nice that we’ve met, people that we’ve met that come out to the shows. It feels awesome it’s really cool.”

Joe- “ It’s great for me too, I love the place a lot and I love L.A. too, I love living in L.A. but I miss it a lot here to, so it’s great to come home and really feel at home, it’s really great.”

What are some of your favorite songs to perform?

Jarrad- “ I really like playing Smoking Limb, which is a new one. I actually love playing any of the songs that we do. That one just jumped out because it’s brand new and it feels really nice, it’s a fun one to play. It’s really fun, and I like playing that For the Fire is always fun to play. Beside the Lake is really fun to play.”

Joe- “Dearly, Beloved, the first Baywood song we ever played in front of anyone else, live in our friends house and we probably played Dream Maker as well that night.”

Have you submitted to go on Vans Warped Tour 2012?

Joe- “ Oh, I don’t know if we, we haven’t tried to get on Warped Tour, we haven’t to be honest tried to do anything. We’re just making music we really love to make and kind of letting it go where it wants to go. That’s one of my favorite things about Baywood. That you kind of make something that you think is wonderful and beautiful, with someone you think is wonderful and beautiful. Let it go where it wants to be, because in the end it doesn’t really matter where it goes because we made it, it’s us, it’s beautiful, that’s how I feel about it at least.”

Jarrad- “ As far as Warped Tour goes we go where ever the wind blows. I’ve never played Warped Tour, Joe has played Warped before and I know that’s a whole different scene, it’s a very different pace. I can definitely entertain and appreciate rowdy, drunk people because at the core I can be that way too. So I can respect it, and be dirty and go on the tour and not shower often. I don’t shower often as it is, so I’m alright with it. I think we’re just seeing how things go.”

Joe- “I love Warped Tour it’s a blast, it’s hard, I think it would really be a battle to play acoustic based music on that tour. Single File did it for an entire summer, that was great but, we were in the myspace.com tent.”

What’re your hopes and goals for the upcoming year?

Jarrad- “ Come the head of the year we’re going to start recording our first full length record. It’s about half way done being written right now, and that’s very exciting right now. I think what’s probably most important right now, at least for me I can only really speak for myself. I think most importantly for us is that we just get together because we lead different lives, Joe and I do. Joe lives on the road, and I live in little town outside Los Angeles, I’m inside all the time and he’s moving and shaking. Most importantly I think for the both of us is to just get back together again. That’s going to be great come January. I’m super excited to just get back in a room, because when we’re in a room together, especially when we’re in a studio, we just pump stuff out. I think that’s definitely number one for me. Touring, playing shows, spreading the vibes and love around is super important as well and just having fun.”

Joe- “ I’m just stoked to get back together, because we’ve both been writing on our own a lot. Because, Jarrad said when I’m home we’re pretty much together twenty four seven. But, I’m gone a lot so it’s been something I’ve been really excited about. We’ve both been writing songs, they’re super exciting and we love them, but I just want to get back together in a room. Who know, we already have written over half a full length record, but who knows where it will go once we start sitting down in a room. It’s a great place to come from, we’re going to have a wealth of songs for this record. Where we might even hold off some for a later date. We’ll also see what the opportunities come up with being on the road and stuff.”

What would you consider some of your most unique aspects of your live show?

Joe- “A lot of love.”

Jarrad- “ Joe and I both play tambourines, while we play guitar at the same time. I feel that’s pretty unique. But we’ve done shows where we just have two acoustic guitars, and it feels very right. Whereas we’ve done other shows, a Chinese fire drill if you will, a bunch of instruments onstage. I’ll play ukulele and Joe will play the mandolin, for half of a song and switch to upright bass. We’ve done these different styles of stuff and for us right now. Being on the road, being in Colorado and doing these shows, strip them down and makes them even more unique. For us because the record has a wealth of instruments and horns and background vocals and stuff like that. For this show it feels really nice to strip them down. Just sing to people who want to hear our songs.”

Joe- “ Just let the songs speak for themselves, feel the way that we wrote them. The way that they just naturally come out is a lot of fun. It’s nice for us, because we could get a gig on London tomorrow and grab our two guitars and jump on a plane to be there. It’s interesting being on the road for so many years, I’ve been in vans, I’ve been in buses, I’ve been in RV’s, and I’ve been with big trailers with a ton of gear. Being able to jump on a plane and play a show just two acoustic guitars is a beautiful thing to me. It’s really simple and nice and you make touring really smart.”

You’re playing for first sold out show, how does that feel?

Both- “It’s great, it’s awesome.”

Jarrad- “ I think it just feels great to be honest for me. I’m excited to play and have fun. Meet these people that I don’t know, I’m excited to just talk to these people. These cool people that came to see our small band play a show in Denver, Colorado. I’ve never really met anyone else besides Joe, this is new and exciting and super fun. “

Joe- “ hopefully singing together and having the experience. Having a packed room, it doesn’t matter what size it is. There’s just energy about it that’s just so great, that’s why I love to play music. It’s my favorite thing about performing, the energy that’s passed back and forth between you and the crowd. I played on the Social Distortion tour and Mike Ness said “I don’t care how good your band is, fifty percent of the show is you guys.” He’s a hundred percent right, and that’s what I’m most excited about tonight. To share that love and those songs with the people that come.”

Pierce The Veil at Summit Music Hall

Mondays, are not usually what one would consider a night to go out. Most nights you would probably be right. Yet, if you stayed in on Monday, December twelfth you missed a great people and even better music. The No Guts, No Glory Tour featuring Pierce The Veil.

The four piece band from San Diego, California stepped onto the stage with screams of excitement from their fans. A pop punk band with a twinge of screaming, turned the crowd into a energetic bunch. Armed with a high pitched but catchy voice Vic (PTV’s lead singer) led the crowd into an hour long set of their best hits.

Energy from the band was in abundance, from Vic crowd surfing from the back to the front. Guitarist and bassist jumping from their amps, instrument flips and crowd interaction were just a few things that high lighted their set.

Musically, everything Pierce The Veil played was on key and on point. I thought I was listening to their albums it was so precise. Breakdowns lead to pits and teenagers in controlled chaos of a hot and sweaty crowd. I have yet to see another band in Pierce The Veil’s genre that can match the intensity they bring on stage.

PTV captured an entire audience’s attention with their set no band before them in the night was able to do. It’s a warm feeling, knowing that there are still great bands out there still, that are actually worth the money to go see live.
